Leaders All Around

Leaders All Around

Leaders all around!

Titan Hill hosts it’s first Leadership Day for students. On Wednesday, November 16, fourth graders at Titan Hill were treated to some extra learning about what leadership is all about.  The students heard one of three speakers:  Dianne Herzog, Children’s Librarian at Council Bluffs Public Library, Justin Toole, Lewis Central graduate and professional baseball player, and Tom Hanafan, Mayor of Council Bluffs.  These speakers shared personal and professional insights, helping students to understand that leadership has many looks, and begins with the choices we make.

Leadership Day was designed and implemented by a group of teachers known as the Leader in Me lead team.  This group’s purpose is to sustain the learning and implementation of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen Covey after reading the book The Leader in Me, which details how elementary schools have taught and used the 7 Habits with their students.  First the staff received the training for themselves, then they began teaching the Habits to students this fall.

Following their time with a speaker, students debriefed with a member of the lead team, making connections between what the speaker shared and the Habits.

Leadership opportunities are growing at Titan Hill.  Students have been encouraged to recognize ways in which they are leaders, whether academically or socially.  One opportunity is to be a leader in hospitality.  Ten of those fourth grade hospitality leaders were chosen to assist with the day by greeting, introducing, and thanking the speakers.

Special thanks are extended to those who have supported our Leader in Me program, including Bob Mundt, Mark Schweer, and John Nelson of the H.H. “Red” and Ruth Nelson Foundation.
